Avoiding the Frumpy Dumpty

A few years ago I bought this denim pencil skirt.  I thought it was just about the best thing ever and added it to my frequently used basics.

Then my mom came to visit me and she put the kibosh on that.  Perhaps it was that I was wearing it with a crew neck shirt and flats?  (seen here) Whatever it was, she assured me I looked like a frumpy soccer mom and made me swear to leave this item alone.  She took me out to buy some”sexy” clothes.  “You’re young, you shouldn’t dress frumpy yet!”  she said.  I’ll admit that this outfit is far from “sexy” but realistically most of the time sexy isn’t my goal.  Perhaps this skirt does look to “soccer mom” unless it’s paired with heels and a breezy ultra feminine top.

What do you think?  Do you have clothes you wear even though they may not be “mom” approved?  It’s sort of ridiculous how their opinion continues to matter even though I’m almost 30 years old.  But then, I’m sure I’ll terrorize my own daughters with my opinions someday, since they’re not in short supply!

Back to Basics

Where did spring go?  Back to something warm.  Now that my closet edit is done for Spring Summer I feel safe enough to try out some of those 30-30 pieces again.

I found this scarf that I permanently borrowed from my Mom but never have gotten around to wearing.  Another item that will feel too wintery in a few weeks.  I loved how the color palette matched the red boots.  This outfit is so basic, just the jean skirt, the plain black sweater and tights but the accessories really kept it from feeling boring (like that one did).

Pulling off the whole scarf look again, and after my sisters comments (see comments after linked post) that a scarf need not feel “stewardessy” I tried to wear it with confidence.  Somewhere I read this inspiring quote, “You can change your clothes as many times as it takes to feel right, but once you walk out the door you need to rock it, because it’s confidence that really make the whole thing work.”

I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad

It’s gotten cool again here, and as I was sorting through my dresser I realized I’ve worn these pants very few times this winter.  They’re fine wale cotton corduroy which makes them feel too heavy for summer.  Being this bright shade of red they’re not really everyday type pants but they’re fun to break out now and then and the cut is very comfortable.

I wore my favorite boots in a new way in this outfit too, underneath the pants, instead of the pants tucked in.  These pants are cut straight and when tucked in tend to blouson from the boot top – which is a funny look.  It makes the boots like a completely different pair of shoes to wear them this way.

This outfit strikes me as very all-American.  The classic work clothes of the working man.  The classics never go out of style even though the cuts and colors change a bit as time goes by.

Winter’s End

Well we can hope right?

This sweater with short sleeves is perfect for California winters!  I love this outfit.  It’s not only comfortable but also cute and really functional.

The boots are wonderful, and super comfortable with a spacious toe-box.  I can’t wear them every day (like my black lace-up boots) because of the color, but every time I don them, I get compliments wherever I go.  A lady at Trader Joe’s stopped me in the produce department to ask where I got them!  They were another Christmas present but my mom got them from Nordstrom’s and I looked this morning and they are still available.  (Although the sizing is very limited at this time.)

30-30 Day 27

I had to work today, an Oscar party at my office.  I normally don’t watch the Oscars, and could mostly care less about who wins what.  This is ironic given that I work in Hollywood in the oh-so-glamorous movie industry.  The only thing I really like is seeing the dresses and how people put things together.  I don’t have much occasion to wear floor length ball gowns but it is interesting how style choices made by stars and their stylists trickle down to us lowly masses.

I have to say I really loved the red dresses that appeared.  I’m predicting that red dresses will star showing up in every-day wear.  See all the dresses on MSN’s Entertainment page.

I decided to wear my red dress one last time this month.  But since I was running around managing the catering crew I needed to wear flats.  It looks a lot less dressy with the boots, but it’s functional so I guess that’s all you can hope for on a day when you’re running around.

I love this dress and I’m so glad I got it.  I think it will be a work-horse year-round, even though I’ll probably wear it out before I get tired of it – which usually happens with dresses from H&M.

30-30 Day 14: Happy V-Day!

Valentine’s Day gets such a bad rap.  But I like it.  Sure, it’s fake, it’s cheesy but really, love is nothing if not a giant cliché!  Plus winter needs as many little sunny spots as it can gather (I say that remembering how dreary winter can be in the Northern states).  Who doesn’t need as much love as they can have in life?  And who I ask doesn’t love red, pink and white?!  Me for one!

In my mind I had thought about wearing this red dress (also worn here) over the top of the white shirt.  Haven’t you seen a mannequin or two wearing something similar?  On plastic perfection it looks cool and creative.  It was really a no go for in real life.  It looked like I was trying to be sexy with a strap-less dress but then got scared and added a shirt underneath.  But I wanted to wearing the dress, so instead I wore it underneath!

Haven’t you seen those blurbs about going from work to date?  Viola!  I’m evening ready, all I have to do is take off the shirt!  Unfortunately I don’t have exciting evening plans – it’s too crowded anyway – but I love how I get another red pencil skirt out of this dress!

30-30 Day 12

Valentine’s Day Weekend!  I wore this simple ensemble to church.  It didn’t even occur to me to wear red because of the upcoming holiday.  All the old ladies (and even a couple of guys) had busted out their red dresses, blouses, tops, sport coats, and ties (I hope girl who was self-conscious last week noticed!)  It looked very festive.

You can’t see from the illustration but the red blouse is transparent silk.  Just wore a black tank top underneath.  Apparently see-thru fabrics are popular now on the runways.  But does anybody really wear that with nothing underneath in real life?

I wore fine mesh fish nets so instead of the open toed heels I went with the booties to keep it more conservative.

The day was beautiful and unseasonably warm, but in the morning I added a black pashmina to keep the chill off.

30-30 Day 4.5 – 5

I went into H&M last month with the express intent of buying a birthday dress.  They had some nice options but I wasn’t sure.  My friend helped with opinions and we both decided we liked this bright red sweet heart one.  (Thanks Kim!)  I saved it all month – it was a little difficult – and finally got to wear it this weekend.

I cheated a little and wore it both to my birthday dinner party on Friday night and to church the next morning.  But nobody saw me twice so – no harm done.  It’s a pretty bright red dress, but with the cardigan I think it’s classy.  A middle aged lady wearing a beautiful red and black plaid taffeta shirt came over and said,

“Wow, I’m glad somebody else is wearing red!  I still hear my mom’s voice in my head saying, ‘Never wear red to church!’    But you wearing that dress makes me feel a lot better!”

I told her not to worry because I loved her shirt and that she looked great in it.

Isn’t it funny how we hear our mother’s voice and opinions well into our adulthood?  I can still think of things I mom has told me that stuck irrationally into my head.

The Red Boots & The Ivy

It was sunny and warmer today, so I wore my sunny California winter short-sleeved sweater.

I realized after leaving home that my leggings looked like a cooler black.  Black can be such an obnoxious color since you’d assume black is black but… no.  Next time I wear this sweater I think I’ll pair it with my skinny jeans.

My hair is picking up so much pink from the sunset it looks red!
