Elbow Patches on the East Coast

Though I don’t live on the East Coast, or consider my style very preppy, or happen to be wearing this as I tramp down an autumn leaf strewn country lane, this look really hits all those notes.

I decided to bust out this blazer one last time before I packed it away for the summer.  Unlike the flat drawing, it is a purpley burgundy (like the photo) corduroy.  This fabric is interesting because it almost seems to shimmer as you move because the under color is lighter orangey burgundy (like the drawing).  And it has elbow patches!  Elbow patches!  How very professorish of me!

I wore it with the teal sweater and not finding any necklace that really worked I decided on this scarf, which happened to have almost the same color teal in it.  I am secretly happy when something matches so well.

This outfit is a completely new combination of pieces and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.  Isn’t it funny how you can have pieces in your closet for year and never think about wearing them together?

Avoiding the Frumpy Dumpty

A few years ago I bought this denim pencil skirt.  I thought it was just about the best thing ever and added it to my frequently used basics.

Then my mom came to visit me and she put the kibosh on that.  Perhaps it was that I was wearing it with a crew neck shirt and flats?  (seen here) Whatever it was, she assured me I looked like a frumpy soccer mom and made me swear to leave this item alone.  She took me out to buy some”sexy” clothes.  “You’re young, you shouldn’t dress frumpy yet!”  she said.  I’ll admit that this outfit is far from “sexy” but realistically most of the time sexy isn’t my goal.  Perhaps this skirt does look to “soccer mom” unless it’s paired with heels and a breezy ultra feminine top.

What do you think?  Do you have clothes you wear even though they may not be “mom” approved?  It’s sort of ridiculous how their opinion continues to matter even though I’m almost 30 years old.  But then, I’m sure I’ll terrorize my own daughters with my opinions someday, since they’re not in short supply!

Classics in Sunny Southern California

After wearing the same 30 pieces (and really it was more like 15) during my 30-30 challenge I feel like those pieces are old friends after such an intimate acquaintance.  These are the pieces I turn to when I’m in a hurry and fresh out of ideas, and in a huge rush.

Work has been really busy lately and my usual ETA at 7:30 has been pushed back to 7am just to keep up.  This means that when I roll out of bed I’m still half asleep and putting together a creative outfit has to be quick.  I wish I’d added a pop of color to this outfit but it was simple and I felt classy and that’s sometimes the best you can ask for on a harried morning.

As you can see the weather today was beautiful, still cool at about 65F, but I love that.

Thanks MN for taking the pic!

Rain Rain Go Away

I woke up this morning and it was incredibly dreary out.  Cold and gray and having rained the night before, wet.  What is this weather?  The end of March and it’s still cool and gross.  Okay, I’ll stop complaining as I know most of you reading this are just beginning to see the first signs of spring and here I am wanting full-blown summer.

I decided boots and jeans were in order and threw on a coat as I walked out the door.  Of course the day I wear a coat it turns sunny and warm by mid afternoon.

I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad

It’s gotten cool again here, and as I was sorting through my dresser I realized I’ve worn these pants very few times this winter.  They’re fine wale cotton corduroy which makes them feel too heavy for summer.  Being this bright shade of red they’re not really everyday type pants but they’re fun to break out now and then and the cut is very comfortable.

I wore my favorite boots in a new way in this outfit too, underneath the pants, instead of the pants tucked in.  These pants are cut straight and when tucked in tend to blouson from the boot top – which is a funny look.  It makes the boots like a completely different pair of shoes to wear them this way.

This outfit strikes me as very all-American.  The classic work clothes of the working man.  The classics never go out of style even though the cuts and colors change a bit as time goes by.

Winter’s End

Well we can hope right?

This sweater with short sleeves is perfect for California winters!  I love this outfit.  It’s not only comfortable but also cute and really functional.

The boots are wonderful, and super comfortable with a spacious toe-box.  I can’t wear them every day (like my black lace-up boots) because of the color, but every time I don them, I get compliments wherever I go.  A lady at Trader Joe’s stopped me in the produce department to ask where I got them!  They were another Christmas present but my mom got them from Nordstrom’s and I looked this morning and they are still available.  (Although the sizing is very limited at this time.)

Victorian Motorcross

30-30 couldn’t be over fast enough for me to get back out and do some shopping!  I realized that I really need more basics on the bottom.

I found these great motocross inspired jeggings.  They fit great but will need to have the waist taken in because they gap pretty badly.  Since the rest of the fit was great I went ahead and got them.  The nice Chinese lady down the street at the dry cleaners does a great tailoring job and she wowed me with my last pair of jeans that I took to her.

The sweater was a gift from my Mom.  She was sad that she’d almost missed the sweater season but since the weather has been crazy cold here lately I assured her I would still get use out of it.

It went so perfectly with the shirt I found on sale from Free People.  If you have one of these stores near you don’t be put off by the insanely hippie vibe.  I wouldn’t describe my style as boho at all, but every time I go in I find something that is unique and cute and once it’s on it strikes a nice balance of artsy and cool.

The shirt and sweater matched so well, both having the same plummy purple (the purple doesn’t really show up too well in the photos because it was such a gray day) and I loved how the sweater rose a bit in the back to show off the shirts little “train.”

30-30 Day 27

I had to work today, an Oscar party at my office.  I normally don’t watch the Oscars, and could mostly care less about who wins what.  This is ironic given that I work in Hollywood in the oh-so-glamorous movie industry.  The only thing I really like is seeing the dresses and how people put things together.  I don’t have much occasion to wear floor length ball gowns but it is interesting how style choices made by stars and their stylists trickle down to us lowly masses.

I have to say I really loved the red dresses that appeared.  I’m predicting that red dresses will star showing up in every-day wear.  See all the dresses on MSN’s Entertainment page.

I decided to wear my red dress one last time this month.  But since I was running around managing the catering crew I needed to wear flats.  It looks a lot less dressy with the boots, but it’s functional so I guess that’s all you can hope for on a day when you’re running around.

I love this dress and I’m so glad I got it.  I think it will be a work-horse year-round, even though I’ll probably wear it out before I get tired of it – which usually happens with dresses from H&M.

30-30 Day 26

I forgot to take a daytime picture so you get this lame indoor one with flash.  Oops!

It has been cold and rainy here and I didn’t feel like wearing heels on a day when the weather was so unpredictable.

I’ve never worn this dress with a blazer since I was worried that the ruffles around the neckline would get in the way but actually I think it worked well.

30-30 Day 25

Pulling off my first fully duplicate look in 25 days.  I’m pretty proud of the fact that I haven’t worn the same thing twice (almost but not completely) in a month.

I love this sweater, it’s that loose weave “penniless glamour” look.  You can’t see it here very well, but it’s woven with army, black, tan and metallic gold threads.  I fell in love with it when I saw it but… sadly I’m not sure how long I’ll keep it.  It doesn’t keep its stretch which means the sleeves just hang and don’t stay pushed up because it’s cheap (Oh, Forever 21).

Well I still love the color, so I’m not sure it’s been a complete waste of $20 or whatever it was that it cost.
